Melissa Dixon
at my desk
a growing pile of paper work --
a poem
diverts my mind -- but
where's my green poetry pen?
silver-frosted branches --
I stand and shiver
in this still air . . .
not daring to touch one
lest it shatter
an insect
caught in a spider web --
my helpless friend
I'm a different species
but I know just how you feel
the black lab
we rescued as a pup
how gracefully
he leaps our fence
to roam the roads again
the golden hours
we clung to in those final days
forgive me, love
I couldn't bear to be
the one to close your eyes
at my age I just
let things come and go . . .
the autumn sun
sinks down in glory
beyond the trees
Melissa Dixon is a Canadian actor and writer who cherishes her close connection to the Pacific coast. Living in retirement, she finds inspiration in the ocean shores and appreciates the companionship of others of like mind who have been drawn to the area. Where tanka is concerned, Melissa says she enjoys the process of focusing on an idea, highlighting the heart of it and then tucking it into a recognizable tanka form.
