Deborah P. Kolodji
the great blue heron
perches on a branch
two sizes too small --
a collective gasp
as it leaves us
children
near the garden pond
feeding koi
this cloudy afternoon ...
flashes of red and gold
ermine
against her cheeks
naked before the fire--
a California girl unused
to snow
