Michael Meyerhofer
winter night --
while she talks
of marriage
the sleeted cars
gleam like diamonds
baby-talking
into the infant's crib --
the child smiles
as though bemused
by my accent
first winter alone . . .
early to bed
with a book of poems
every other page
dog-eared
another long day --
returning home
with poetry journals
and a takeout bowl
of hot & sour soup
skinny-dipping . . .
when she breathes
her breasts
turn moonlight
into water
i overhear the bosses
discuss layoffs --
plotting my revenge
i pocket a new stapler
then put it back
Michael Meyerhofer is currently earning his MFA at Southern Illinois University, "after a three-year stint in the 'real world" where, he tells us, he "floated between data entry jobs . . . and briefly held a job collecting urine samples at a rehab center." Meyerhofer's work has appeared in many webzine and print journals over the past years.
