Kala Ramesh
keeping the house clean
day in and day out
I realize–
tidiness and dirt are visible
only to me
when he was alive
i wanted the others
to praise our kid
now . . . he is no more
all I want is his words
the breath
passing through
the bamboo flute
I listen . . .
flows out as music
in the hands
of an ordinary craftsman
the cotton loom
becomes
the beautiful khadi
in the hands
of a master craftsman
pumpkin shell and strings
become
a resonant sitar
I make a constant effort
to understand his mind
for he says
he knows me
through and through
Kala Ramesh is a performing vocalist in Indian Classical Music and she has given numerous concerts in India. She has several published articles on Indian music and Indian thought to her credit. Kala has also taught creative art in schools and workshops for children for The Times of India. Kala writes: "A musical note lives for a moment and fades into the void . . . that sacred silence. And Hindustani music, being completely extempore, is as fresh as a just bloomed lily. Being very similar in form, music attracted me to haiku and tanka. In all three, I believe there is a resonance that lingers in the spirit long after the sound has faded."
