the first week
after my son's death
I pack away his books
turning a page in his diary
I find a poem addressed to me

waking
from a dream
of a dolphin
I face the reality
of another day

below
the jet
cloud shadows
returning family regale
me with their tales

rain squall
remaining blossoms
scurry
across the footpath
my thoughts race too

Chinese children
use a word
I don't understand
I know by their laughter
it's something rude

Patricia Prime tells us: I had been writing haiku for some time and was in touch with Michael Dylan Welch when he formed the Tanka Society of America. It was the year 2000 and I decided to try my hand at tanka. My first tanka was sent to Michael McClintock for his 'Tanka Cafe' column in the TSA Newsletter and was published by him. Since then I've published tanka in The New Zealand Poetry Society Newsletter, Valley Micropress (NZ), winterSPIN (NZ), Kokako (NZ), paper wasp (AUS), Stylus (AUS), Yellow Moon (AUS), Presence (UK), Moonstone (UK), Raw NerVZ (CAN) and Poets International (INDIA).
